PoleWork Exercises

A Selection of Pole Work & Grid Work

The Smile

This Pole Work exercise will help you in many different areas with your horse.

  • Using the tramlines (which can be moved closer to make it harder) you can work on a semi circle/full circle, work on suppleness in movement, and straightness through the tramlines.

  • Transition work, using the poles or squares as trigger points to move up or down a pace, keeping in sync with the poles and tram lines

  • Creating smaller circles across the squares, using them to strengthen flexibility

The Shield

This pole work exercise creates multiple exercises in one session

  • Using the tramlines to create straightness, making the narrower or wider as you go

  • Create a figure of 8 loop into the box

  • Use the box in the middle for transitioning up and down

  • Use the box/poles in the middles to engage in teaching your horse flying changes

The Fence

Use this pole set up to engage your horses rear end

  • straight lines across the grids, making the tramlines narrower each time

  • Circle out using the points of the fence, gets your horse bending and looking

  • use a 3 loop serpentine coming in over the points to help with straightness, suppleness and control

The T

This pole set up is an easy starter

  • Use boxes for transitions up and down

  • Grids for straightness

  • Create large to small circles using each end of the T

  • Use the boxes to help aid turn on the forehands

  • Loops, bends and circles all help with suppleness

The H

This exercise will help with bending and control

  • Using the turns to create suppleness through the entire horse

  • Using circles on each corner to create energy and lifting

  • Straight across each end

The Heart

This exercise is a brilliant starter

  • Builds rhythm and straightness

  • Uses different directions across the heart

  • Creates bending in the middle, using different entry and exit points

The Eagle

Lots to do here!

  • Bending and controlling the movement

  • Transitioning through

  • Circles, straightness and flexibility

  • elevation and coordination, exercises like leg yielding etc

Spaceship

The spaceship is a great way to introduce circles to a horse

  • balanced feel throughout each movement

  • use the points to create an 8 style movement

  • use the arrow heads for a circle, and straightness through the square

  • transitions from diagonals

In & Out

Great exercise for straightness and elevation

  • straightness through the trams

  • elevation across the triangles

  • nice pacing the whole way through

Dog Bone

Great exercise for pacing, control and gridwork

  • using different striding you can make this into single strides, bounces etc

  • the diagonals can be used for leg yielding

  • raised poles, and jumps can be applied to this
